NADA YOGA, AUM (OMKARA, PRANAVA), MANTRA SHASTRA, JAPA

Japa is the repetition of a mantra with focussed intention, faith or devotion.

"If the mind be in one place, Shiva in another, Shakti in another and life-breath still in another place, even ten million repetitions of mantra (Japa) is useless."
- from the Kularnava Tantra

"Japa is of three kinds.
Japa done aloud is the lowest;
Japa done in low tones is the middle;
Japa done mentally is the best."
- Kularnava Tantra

ADVANCED-LEVEL TEACHINGS:

"Sounds have an important part to play in Kundalini Yoga (and so also in the sadhana of the Siddhas) and are known as bija-aksaras. The ma sound is considered the third kala (phase) of the moon. The power in man rises opening the knots within and proceeds to act, stationing itself firmly on Sadasiva-tattva as the base for its action."
"The ma is that form of mantra in which the sound power is in great concentration and kundalini can arise. M is mantresa, the Lord of the mantra, the super-control power of mantra lies in m."

- commentary on Gorakkar's Brahma Jnana Darisanam in The Yoga of the 18 Siddhas
(Babaji's Kriya Yoga Publications)
